Who we are

The Professional Literacy Company was set up in July 2010 by four experienced literacy consultants in response to dramatic changes in government funding. When it became clear that Local Authorities would no longer be able to maintain their own professional teams to support literacy in schools, the PLC decided to step in to provide that support

The PLC has four working directors, all with substantial experience of literacy training and development.

Pie Corbett has established a national following as a storyteller, poet, writer and trainer. Through his work as a teacher trainer and national presenter he has inspired a generation of literacy teachers, and for many people he epitomizes what was best about the National Strategy in his work on ‘Talk for Writing’.

Gill Matthews is a writer and trainer with a particular interest in writing and non-fiction. With her writing partner Sylvia Karavis she was responsible for ground-breaking work on Literacy World and Writers’ World, and she is currently building a strong following for her experiential literacy work, ‘Writing for Real’, including the Year 6 revision units ‘SPOOCS’ and ‘Back from the Future’ (www.ellipsispublishing.co.uk).

Kevin Jeffery worked with John Stannard to establish first the original National Literacy Project and then the National Literacy Strategy. He has since worked as director of two large school partnerships, in Gloucester and the West Midlands. He has a particular interest in 9-13 work, and is currently lead adviser for the Black Country Challenge on a ‘Literacy in the Middle Years’ project.

Stephanie Austwick left her Regional Adviser post with the National Strategy team in August 2010 to go freelance having built a strong reputation in the West Midlands for imaginative approaches to primary literacy teaching. She is currently working with Gill on the ‘Writing for Real’ project.
